republicans. this is a title but it's a lot of attention and thanks to mitt romney and paul ryan and got a lot of attention they literally rush to google after watching the convention and what's the matter with white people. so i want to think sam. . meanwhile, gop vice presidential candidate paul ryan suggests taking another route. his idea is to drill for oil in the arctic, then invest the profits in renewable energy. consumers proved to be in a spending mood this october. the international council of shopping centers says retailers are reporting modest gains for the month. costco was one of those stores, with sales rising 7% from the same time last year. macy's' same-store sales popped 4.1%, while target saw a smaller increase of 2.4% - lower than analyst expectations. however, superstorm sandy remains a concern going forward. analysts think some consumers along the east coat may have spent extra preparing for sandy and that it could have an impact on christmas spending. retailers hope the spending trend continues into the holiday shopping season. big retailers such as best buy, macy's, kohl's and walmart all open bright and early at 12 am on black friday. kmart opens at 5 am and toys 'r' us at 9 am. and online shopping isn't left out - amazon will offer limited- time specials as part of its "black friday deals store." in corporat
. your question goes to mr. murphy. >> we have seen different numbers on what the paul ryan plan would do in the fact to increase costs to seniors, anywhere from $6,350 to about $200 a month. what kind of number can we look at and say this is what a cut will look like under this plan because of a large area of the budget that needs to be looked at? >> that is the kaiser family foundation study. under the ryan plan, 60% of seniors will face cost increases. this is something that needs to be addressed. under their plan, we end medicare as we know it. we need to reach across the aisle and ensure that medicare is there for generations to come. i was talking to seniors and you could see the fear in their eyes, worrying that medicare will be taken from them. we cannot let it happen. we need real solutions. under the affordable care act, they found inefficiencies and they have taken back away from insurance company executives, from the pharmaceuticals, and given it back to seniors, this is what we need to do to bring down the long term cost curve that is driving our costs through the roof. >> we

with paul ryan. >> andrea, good morning to you. as you mention all eyes on sandy, including these two presidential campaigns. more on that in just a moment. first over the next ten days expect to see the president and governor romney hit these battleground states hard. including ohio. perhaps the most critical of them all. it could ultimately decide who wins this race. yesterday governor romney health two events in the buckeye state including a rousing rally with paul ryan last night in north canton, ohio. the campaign says about 8,000 people showed up for that event, braving some pretty brisk temperatures outside last night. now he still has some work to do here. the latest cnn poll has the president up 50 to 46. four points. that's about half of what the lead was just a few weeks ago. governor romney has tipped into that lead but he still has some ways to go. as far as the president, he just wrapped up a 5,000 mile plus barnstorming tour through the battleground state. on friday he took the day off the trail. spent time doing interviews on the radio and television, including mtv. he

. republican paul ryan was in florida. and vice president biden replaced the president at a late day event in ohio. so what impact will the storm have on the final week of the so what impact will the storm have on the final week of the race? to examine that and the state of the campaign, we are joined by susan page, washington bureau chief of "u.s.a. today," and dan balz, chief correspondent of the "washington post." welcome to you both. dan, to you first. what effect is this big storm having on the campaign? >> well, as you've reported, it has shut down campaign activity for the most part. that will continue to be the case at least until wednesday when both campaigns re-evaluate whether it's prudent or proper for either president obama or governor romney to return to the campaign trail. they're operating with very little information. we can't know at this point just how devastating the damage might turn out to be. as a result i think both campaigns are being very cautious about what they do other than paying attention to the storm. >> woodruff: susan, what's your read on how the campaigns
